Charleston requires pools to be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches high with self-closing, self-latching gates. Pool barriers must comply with the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code.
Under Charleston's building code, which adopts the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, all swimming pools must be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches high. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with latches at least 54 inches above grade or otherwise inaccessible to small children. The barrier must not have openings that allow passage of a 4-inch sphere. Direct access from a house to a pool area must have self-closing doors with alarms. Pool barriers must be inspected and approved before the pool is filled.
Non-compliant pool barriers result in stop-work orders and fines. Pools without adequate barriers may not receive a certificate of occupancy.
