Worcester requires all swimming pools to be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches (4 feet) high under Massachusetts building code and 780 CMR. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching with latches at least 54 inches high.
Massachusetts building code (780 CMR) and Worcester require all residential swimming pools to be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches (4 feet) high. The barrier must not allow passage of a 4-inch diameter sphere. All entry gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with latches mounted at least 54 inches above ground on the pool side. The barrier must not be easily climbable β no horizontal rails or footholds on the outside. Above-ground pools with sides at least 48 inches above grade may use the pool wall as a barrier, but access points must be secured. Pool covers do not replace the barrier requirement. The Worcester Building Commissioner reviews and inspects pool barrier installations as part of the building permit process.
Building code violation: fines and orders to install compliant barriers. Pool may need to be drained until barriers are in place. Significant liability exposure.
