Metro Nashville requires an electrical permit for hot tub 240V circuits. Lockable hardcover meeting ASTM F1346 can substitute for perimeter barrier under IRC Appendix G. Must meet 5-foot rear setback.
Hot tubs and spas in Davidson County require an electrical permit from Metro Codes for the dedicated 240V/50A GFCI-protected circuit per NEC Article 680. Building permit also required if the spa is part of a deck or structure over 30 inches above grade. Under IRC Appendix G as adopted by Metro, a spa equipped with a powered, lockable safety cover meeting ASTM F1346 is exempt from the 48-inch perimeter barrier requirement that otherwise applies to pools. Without a qualifying cover, the 48-inch barrier rules apply the same as pools. Setbacks: typically 5 feet from rear and side property lines in R-zones, 10 feet from front yard, and at least 5 feet from the dwelling foundation unless engineered. Drainage when emptying must go to sanitary sewer or an approved disposal point, not to the street or neighbor's property. Discharging chlorinated spa water to storm drains violates Metro Stormwater rules.
Unpermitted electrical: stop-work, retroactive permit plus 50% penalty fee. Missing cover or barrier: stop-use order. Stormwater discharge: Metro Water Services fine $100-$500.
