Hot tubs and spas over 24 inches deep follow the same IRC Appendix G rules as pools. However, IRC Section AG105.5 allows spas and hot tubs to use an ASTM F1346-compliant lockable safety cover in lieu of a 48-inch barrier fence. Electrical must be GFCI-protected and installed per NEC Article 680 by licensed electrician. L&I permit required for installation and electrical work. Portable spas plugging into standard 120V GFCI outlet still require electrical inspection.
