Hot tubs are uniquely allowed to satisfy the barrier requirement via a 'safety cover' meeting ASTM F 1346 standards — a locking, hard-shell cover that withstands the weight of an adult walking on it. Decks supporting a hot tub require an engineer's letter or stamped plans verifying structural adequacy. GFCI protection per NEC 680.42 is mandatory. The disconnect switch must be within sight of the tub but at least 5 ft from the tub's edge. Septic-system setback applies; the discharge water cannot go to the drainfield.
Unpermitted: civil penalty plus removal/correction order. Electrical violations are particularly serious — improper bonding/GFCI can result in inspections halt across the project.
