Georgia's residential code requires pool access gates to open outward, be self-closing, and have a self-latching device. When the latch is under 54 inches high, the gate and barrier get extra child-proofing to prevent unauthorized entry.
International Residential Code Appendix G, adopted by Georgia, sets the layered protections that keep young children out of backyard pools in unincorporated Chatham County. Section AG105.2 Item 8 requires pedestrian access gates to open outward away from the pool, be self-closing, and have a self-latching device. If the latch release is less than 54 inches above the bottom of the gate, it must be on the pool side with no opening greater than a half inch within 18 inches of the release. These barrier, gate, and latch rules must all be satisfied before the pool passes final inspection.
Non-compliant gates or latches fail inspection and block the certificate of completion; Chatham County code enforcement may cite an unsecured pool as a hazard.
