Where a dwelling wall serves as part of the pool barrier, Louisiana's adopted pool code requires added protection: a door alarm audible when opened, a self-closing/self-latching door, or a listed safety cover. Pool equipment must sit at least 36 inches outside the barrier.
Under the adopted ISPSC Sec. 305, where a wall of the dwelling forms part of the barrier and a door gives direct access to the pool, that door must have an alarm producing an audible warning when opened (listed to UL 2017), with the deactivation switch at least 54 inches above the threshold. Alternatives include a self-closing, self-latching door or a listed and labeled ASTM F1346 safety cover. Public and semi-public pools in Jefferson Parish are additionally regulated by the Louisiana State Sanitary Code (LAC Title 51) covering water quality, safety equipment, and operation. Pool pumps, filters, and heaters located outside the barrier must be at least 36 inches from it so they cannot be used as a climbing aid.
Missing door alarms, non-compliant house-wall barriers, or absent safety covers are code violations that block final inspection and pool occupancy. Public-pool sanitary violations are enforced by the Louisiana Department of Health.
