Where a house wall forms part of the pool barrier, doors and low windows with direct pool access must have a listed water-hazard alarm, an ASTM F1346 safety cover, or self-closing/self-latching protection. Public (Class A/B) pools separately need barriers meeting the state Sanitary Code.
Under ISPSC Section 305.4, where a dwelling wall serves as part of the barrier, operable windows with sills under 48 inches and doors with direct pool access must carry an alarm listed to UL 2017, unless an ASTM F1346 safety cover or equivalent self-latching protection is provided. Alarm deactivation switches sit at least 54 inches high. For public pools, the Louisiana State Sanitary Code (LAC Title 51, Part XXIV) requires Class A or B pools to be enclosed by a barrier with no external handholds or footholds.
Pools failing the alarm, cover, or barrier standards will not pass final inspection; public-pool operators face state Office of Public Health enforcement.
