Tennessee's Katie Beth's Law requires a pool alarm on every residential swimming pool installed after January 1, 2011. The alarm must sound at 50 decibels when a person or 15-pound object enters the water.
Katie Beth's Law (T.C.A. §§ 68-14-801 to 807) applies statewide, including Rutherford County. Anyone who acquires a residential pool installed after January 1, 2011 must install and maintain a pool alarm before use. A qualifying alarm emits at least a 50-decibel sound when a person or object weighing 15 pounds or more enters the water. Local governments cannot issue a pool building permit unless a functioning alarm will be installed before completion, and electrical inspectors withhold final wiring approval without one.
A violation of Katie Beth's Law is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine only up to $100; second and later offenses up to $500.
