Douglas County/Omaha residents must place trash and recycling bins at the curb with lids closed by 6 AM on collection day. Bins must be retrieved within 24 hours of pickup and stored out of public view between collections.
Omaha Municipal Code requires trash and recycling bins to be placed at the curbside edge on the scheduled collection day with lids fully closed to prevent wildlife and wind scatter. Bins should face the street, be spaced at least 3 feet apart and 3 feet from parked cars, mailboxes, fire hydrants, and utility poles to allow the automated collection arm to grip. Bins must be retrieved from the curb within 24 hours of collection. Between collections, bins must be stored behind the front building line β in the garage, side yard, or screened storage area β and not visible from the public right-of-way. Front-yard storage is a common property maintenance complaint. Alley-serviced neighborhoods (common in older Omaha β Dundee, Benson, Florence, Bemis Park) follow alley-specific placement rules. FCC-provided carts are the property of the city and must not be painted, modified, or used at another address. Damaged carts are replaced free of charge by calling Omaha 311.
Bins left out past 24-hour deadline: warning first, then $25 to $100 per occurrence under property maintenance code. Improperly placed bins may be skipped by the hauler. Bins stored in front yard in public view: property maintenance citation.
