Manhattan bins must be placed at the curb no earlier than set-out time, kept lidded, and removed from the sidewalk within a day of pickup.
DSNY bin placement rules in New York County (Manhattan) require containers be kept out of public view between collections β stored in areaways, basements, courtyards, or side alleys, not on the public sidewalk. On collection day, bins may be placed at the curb no earlier than 6 pm the night before (containerized) or per the applicable set-out window, and must be removed from the sidewalk by the end of the pickup day. Bins must be lidded, leak-proof, and labeled with the property address. Under the 2024 Official NYC Bin requirement for many buildings, only specified bin types qualify starting in 2026. Oversize accumulation, unsecured lids, and permanent sidewalk storage result in DSNY summonses. Property owners can use revocable-consent enclosures in some cases, subject to DOT approval.
