DSNY collects residential trash in Manhattan on scheduled days; set-out times are now 8 pm with bins (or 6 pm with bins) per the 2024-2025 containerization rules.
The NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) collects residential trash and recycling in New York County (Manhattan) on a district-by-district schedule. Under the 2024-2025 containerization initiative, all residential trash must now be placed in secure, lidded bins rather than loose bags on the sidewalk. Set-out rules updated in 2024: property owners may set out containerized trash after 6 pm, or after 8 pm if using bags (for buildings with more than 9 units that opted not to containerize yet). Bins must be removed from the sidewalk by the end of the pickup day. Commercial waste is handled by licensed private carters under NYC Business Integrity Commission oversight, with new Commercial Waste Zones rolling out. Missed pickups are reported via 311. Violations draw DSNY summonses ranging from 50 dollars to several hundred dollars.
