Mariposa County Code defines bulky waste as large items like appliances, furniture, and tree branches. Residents self-haul bulky items to the Mariposa Landfill or a transfer station, where fees apply. Many specialty items (appliances, e-waste, tires, propane tanks) require separate handling and some carry fees.
Mariposa County Code Section 8.36.020 defines 'bulky waste' as 'large items of solid waste such as appliances, furniture, large auto parts, trees, branches, stumps, and other oversize wastes whose large size precludes or complicates their handling by normal collection, processing, or disposal methods.' Because the county is self-haul, residents transport bulky items themselves to the Mariposa Landfill, Composting and Recycling Center on Highway 49 North or to a transfer station, where disposal fees set by the Board of Supervisors under Section 8.36.100 apply. The County's transfer-station guidance notes that electronics, appliances, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and tires require separate handling and that many of these items incur fees; the Don Pedro station additionally accepts used motor oil and filters. In the mandatory-collection Wawona County Service Area 2-W, Section 8.36.110(D) specifies that 'bulky waste, hazardous waste and construction/demolition wastes are not included in the mandatory collection and removal service' β residents there must arrange proper disposal of those items themselves. Hazardous waste may not be disposed of anywhere in the county under Section 8.36.060(E); it must go to household-hazardous-waste collection. Vehicles used to haul refuse, including bulky loads, must be covered to prevent spillage and litter under Section 8.36.040(A).
Improper disposal or illegal dumping of bulky waste violates Sections 8.36.060 and 8.36.150; hazardous-waste disposal in the county is a Chapter 8.36 violation.
