Oversized items β mattresses, furniture, and other bulky waste β are taken to the county landfill at 85 Panther Branch Road, Alexander. The transfer station accepts white goods (appliances), lead-acid batteries, and tires (first 10 tires free, then $2 each; on rims $2 each) but not televisions, computer monitors, brush, concrete, or motor oil. Appliances are diverted for recycling because NC law prohibits disposing of them in the landfill. Household self-haul loads are charged per bag or by weight (pickups/vans/small trailers $53.50 per ton, $10 minimum as of July 1, 2026). Call the Solid Waste Office (828-250-5460) before hauling unusual items.
Prohibited items left at the wrong facility may be refused; dumping bulky items on the roadside or private land is illegal dumping under NCGS 14-399.
