Kent County does not offer curbside bulk pickup. Residents self-haul large and specialty items to county facilities. As of January 1, 2026 a mattress or box spring is $20 each, appliances with refrigerant $20 each, and regular tires $20 each; electronics and scrap metal are free.
Because the county provides no household collection, bulky-item disposal is handled by self-hauling to Kent County DPW facilities (Waste-to-Energy in Grand Rapids, South Kent Landfill in Byron Center, North Kent Transfer Station in Rockford) or by arranging a special pickup with a private hauler. The county's published resident fee schedule, effective January 1, 2026, sets specialty rates: mattress or box spring $20.00 each; appliances with refrigerant $20.00 each; regular tires (up to 42") $20.00 each and large tires $25.00 each; CRT monitors $4.00-$6.00 for Kent County residents. Electronics, other appliances, scrap metal, and single-stream recyclables are accepted free. General bagged trash is $5.00 per bag or a by-the-load rate for full vehicles.
No county penalty applies to lawful self-haul disposal; improperly dumping bulky items instead of hauling them is illegal dumping, prosecuted under Michigan's litter law (MCL 324.8905a).
