Grand Rapids follows the International Fire Code as adopted by Michigan, capping residential propane storage and requiring outdoor placement away from ignition sources, basements, and means of egress.
Michigan adopts the International Fire Code, enforced locally by GRFD. Residential occupants may store no more than two 20-pound or one 100-pound DOT propane cylinder outdoors at a single-family home. Cylinders must sit upright on a non-combustible surface, at least five feet from doorways, windows, and combustible structures, and never inside a basement, attic, or attached garage when the building has occupied living space. Tanks over 125 gallons water capacity require a GRFD permit, setbacks per NFPA 58, and inspection before fill.
Improper storage triggers GRFD correction orders and fines up to 500 dollars per violation. Continued non-compliance can lead to cylinder confiscation and revocation of any installer or supplier permit.
