Summary
Grand Rapids requires operating smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every story of a dwelling, including rental units before occupancy.
Single-station or multiple-station smoke alarms, as specified in this Article, are required and shall be installed and maintained in full operating condition as specified in this Article. Additional approved smoke alarms installed in accordance with National Fire Protection Association recommendations are both recommended and encouraged.

Sec. 9.832. - Smoke Alarm Location and Installation Date. (1)Required smoke alarms shall be located in each of the following locations:(A)In each bedroom, sleeping room or regular sleeping location.(B)Outside of each sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms, sleeping rooms or sleeping locations.(C)On every story of the dwelling unit including basements.

City Code § 9.831 requires single- or multiple-station smoke alarms in every dwelling. Section 9.832 places them in each bedroom or sleeping room, in the hallway outside each sleeping area, and on every story including basements. Alarms may run on household AC current with battery backup, or a sealed 10-year lithium battery (§ 9.835). Landlords may not rent a dwelling for residential or sleeping use unless it complies (§ 9.838), and disabling an alarm or removing its battery in a home where a child lives is prohibited (§ 9.836).
