Mattresses, box springs, and textiles cannot go in the trash anywhere in Hampshire County under the MassDEP waste ban at 310 CMR 19.017, effective November 1, 2022. Whole tires, appliances, and TVs are banned too. Bulky pickup is arranged town by town.
Large items are governed by the statewide MassDEP disposal ban, not the county. Under 310 CMR 19.017, mattresses and box springs of every size, including foam and boxed models, plus textiles, whole tires, white goods (large appliances), and cathode ray tube TVs and monitors are banned from trash and must be recycled or reused. The ban took effect for mattresses and textiles on November 1, 2022. For collection, Northampton, Easthampton, and South Hadley handle bulky items by appointment or sticker, while Amherst residents arrange it through their hauler. Belchertown and Ware take bulky and banned items at their transfer stations, usually for a per-item fee.
Putting a banned mattress, appliance, or TV in the trash violates the state waste ban. Haulers reject the load, and MassDEP can penalize disposal of restricted material through the facility that accepts it.
