Bulky item disposal in unincorporated Merced County is handled by the franchised hauler. Gilton residential customers receive two bulky item pickups per year by appointment, plus free at-home electronic-waste collection. Residents can also self-haul large items to the Highway 59 or Billy Wright landfills.
Large items that do not fit in a cart — furniture, mattresses, appliances and similar bulky goods — are disposed of through the resident's franchised hauler rather than a separate County program. Gilton Solid Waste residential customers receive two bulky item pickups per year; pickups are scheduled by appointment through Gilton Customer Service (209-527-3781), which also lists which items qualify. Gilton additionally collects electronic devices (e-waste) from households at no cost, and these can be scheduled together with a bulky item pickup. Waste Management and Mid Valley Disposal customers should contact their own hauler for that community's bulky item allowance and scheduling. As an alternative, residents may self-haul large and bulky items directly to the County's regional landfills operated through the Merced County Regional Waste Management Authority: the Highway 59 Landfill at 7040 N. Highway 59 in Merced and the Billy Wright Landfill at 17173 Billy Wright Road in Los Banos. Both are open Monday through Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and charge gate/tipping fees by load. Household hazardous waste (paint, chemicals, batteries) must not be placed at the curb or in carts and is handled through MCRWMA's separate HHW program.
Setting bulky items, appliances or e-waste at the curb without scheduling a pickup, or dumping them on vacant land or roadsides, can be cited as illegal dumping and as a public nuisance/property-blight violation. Mixing household hazardous waste into trash or bulky loads is prohibited.
