Newton residents may schedule bulk item pickup for large items like furniture and mattresses by calling the DPW and purchasing bulk stickers. Appliances with refrigerants require special handling.
Newton residents can dispose of bulky household items through the scheduled bulk collection program operated by the Department of Public Works. Residents must call 311 or the DPW directly at least 48 hours before their regular collection day to schedule pickup and must purchase bulk item stickers from the Newton City Hall or authorized retailers. Typical items accepted include mattresses, box springs, couches, chairs, dressers, tables, and small appliances without refrigerants. Mattresses and box springs must be wrapped in plastic due to state disposal ban effective November 2022. Items containing CFCs such as refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners require a special refrigerant removal fee and EPA-certified handling. Electronics (computers, TVs, monitors) are banned from trash and must go to the Resource Recovery Center at Rumford Avenue. Construction and demolition debris, tires, and hazardous materials are not accepted in residential bulk pickup.
