Sedgwick County encourages residents to self-haul large, bulky items, tires, appliances, wood and brush, to its transfer stations. CFC appliances (fridges, freezers, ACs) are accepted for an extra charge, and construction/demolition debris goes to a transfer station or a C&D landfill.
The county's Environmental Resources division tells residents to self-haul "large, bulky items (i.e. tires, appliances, wood waste, brush, etc.)" to the North (37th St. North and West Street) or South (55th St. South and Hoover Road) transfer stations. CFC-containing appliances such as air conditioners, freezers and refrigerators are accepted at the Waste Connections transfer stations subject to an additional charge. Construction and demolition debris can be hauled to either transfer station or to a C&D landfill; under Section 24-30(b) of the county Solid Waste Code, C&D material is now accepted at any transfer station. Wood and yard waste can also go to composting sites.
Dumping bulky items on roadsides or private land instead of a permitted site is illegal dumping, subject to county code and state littering penalties.
