The Philadelphia Streets Department Sanitation Division collects household trash and recycling on a weekly schedule assigned by address. Residents may set out material no earlier than 7 PM the night before collection and empty containers must be retrieved by 7 PM on collection day. Trash must be in sealed bags or rigid containers of 32 gallons or less; the four-bag limit per week applies. Properties with seven or more units must arrange private commercial hauling. Holiday schedules shift collection by one day following six observed holidays (New Years, MLK Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas). Sanitation Convenience Centers accept up to 12 additional bags weekly free for residents.
Early or late set-out: $50 first offense, up to $300 repeat per Phila. Code 10-717. Overweight containers (over 40 lbs): collection refused. Loose trash not bagged: $75 fine.
