Recycling is voluntary in unincorporated Sedgwick County; there is no mandate to recycle. All licensed haulers offer single-stream curbside recycling, and the county runs a Household Hazardous Waste facility. Residents can also self-haul recyclables and compostable wood/yard waste.
Sedgwick County does not require residents to recycle. However, the county reports that "single-stream curbside recycling collection is offered by all haulers," so any resident who contracts for service can add recycling. Wood and yard waste can be diverted to composting sites, and the county operates a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility that in 2025 took in nearly a million pounds of material and runs a Swap-and-Shop reuse program. Overall reported recycling tonnage rose about 20% year over year. Cities may adopt stricter recycling programs within their limits.
No penalty for not recycling; the program is voluntary. Improperly disposing of hazardous or banned materials, however, is regulated separately.
