Recycling is mandatory statewide under MGL c.21H and 310 CMR 19.017. Residents must separate paper, cardboard, metal, glass, and plastic containers from trash.
Massachusetts has one of the nations most aggressive recycling mandates. Under MGL c.21H and 310 CMR 19.017 waste bans apply to all municipalities in Middlesex County. Banned from disposal include paper, cardboard, glass, metal, single-resin plastic containers, yard waste, leaf and yard waste, asphalt pavement, brick, concrete, metal, wood, clean gypsum wallboard, electronics including televisions and computer monitors, cathode ray tubes, white goods, commercial food waste over one-half ton per week since 2022, and mattresses and textiles since 2022. Middlesex County cities use single-stream recycling collected weekly or biweekly. Contamination rules prohibit plastic bags, tanglers, food-soiled items, and non-containers. Repeat contamination can result in warning stickers and eventual service suspension. Businesses generating over one ton of solid waste weekly must have a recycling program.
