Tyler does not require residents to recycle. Curbside recycling is a voluntary subscription add-on at $5.96 per month plus tax, providing collection twice a month in a dedicated cart. Service was suspended and then resumed in July 2025 under a new recycling contract. Accepted materials include rinsed plastics #1 through #7 with lids removed, crushed aluminum and tin cans, broken-down cardboard, newspaper, magazines, junk mail, office paper, paper grocery bags, food and beverage cartons, and empty aerosol cans. Glass is not accepted. Carts with contaminated or unaccepted items may be left unserviced. Enroll by calling (903) 531-1388 or emailing SolidWaste@TylerTexas.com.
There is no penalty for choosing not to recycle, since the program is optional. Subscribers whose carts contain glass or other unaccepted, contaminated materials may have the cart left unserviced until the load is corrected.
