Louisville Metro does not have a formal heritage tree ordinance but protects trees in Olmsted Parks, Tree Preservation Areas (TPAs), and historic landmark districts. TreesLouisville and Metro Parks track significant specimen trees.
Louisville Metro lacks a stand-alone heritage tree ordinance comparable to Savannah or Atlanta, but LDC ยง10 designates Tree Preservation Areas (TPAs) where existing mature trees must be retained during development. LDC ยง10.2.6 also requires preservation credits for trees over 20 inches DBH retained during site development. Trees in the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed park system (Cherokee, Iroquois, Shawnee, Seneca, Chickasaw) are protected as part of National Register historic landscapes; alterations require Olmsted Parks Conservancy consultation. Trees within local historic preservation districts (Old Louisville, Butchertown, Cherokee Triangle, West Main, Limerick, Parkland) need Architectural Review Committee approval through Metro Historic Preservation for removal if they contribute to the district character. TreesLouisville and the Louisville Urban Forestry team promote voluntary champion tree registration.
Removal of TPA tree during development: replacement at required caliper-inch ratio plus fines under LDC ยง11. Tree removal in historic district without COA: $100-$500 per LMCO ยง32.273 plus restoration order. Damage to Olmsted park trees: civil and criminal penalties.
