Louisville Metro LDC Β§10 requires a tree removal permit for significant trees in buffer yards, landscape areas, and certain development projects. Street trees in public right-of-way are managed by Metro Public Works and require permits.
Louisville Metro LDC Β§10 (Landscaping, Buffering, and Open Space) governs tree protection. On single-family residential lots outside of buffer yards, homeowners generally may remove trees on their private property without a permit, except for street trees in the public right-of-way. Street trees are managed by Louisville Metro Public Works under LMCO Ch. 97 and require a right-of-way permit for removal, pruning beyond minor trimming, or replacement; unauthorized removal triggers LMCO Β§97.12 penalties. Commercial and multi-family projects must protect required landscape trees per the approved site plan; removing a landscape-required tree triggers replacement under LDC Β§10.4. The Olmsted Parks Conservancy and Metro Parks protect trees in designated parks (Cherokee, Iroquois, Shawnee, Seneca). Construction near Tree Preservation Areas in the LDC requires critical root zone fencing.
Unauthorized removal of street tree: LMCO Β§97.99 fines $100-$500 plus replacement cost. Removing a required landscape tree from an approved site plan: replacement at 2:1 caliper-inch ratio. Damage during construction within critical root zone: remediation and fines.
