Coral Springs requires a no-charge tree removal permit for removing any canopy tree or palm under Section 212 of the Land Development Code. Specimen and historic trees require a council plan permit before any pruning or removal. Certain invasive species are exempt from permits.
Section 212 of the Coral Springs Land Development Code (Chapter 2, Article I) governs tree protection and conservation. A no-charge tree removal permit is required before removing any canopy tree or palm on residential property. Applications are processed through the Community Development Department's Landscaping Division. Specimen or historic trees, defined as very mature and exemplary specimens of their species, require a council plan permit before any pruning or removal takes place. Residents must contact the Landscaping Development Department at 954-344-1160 to determine if a tree qualifies as specimen or historic. Several invasive species are exempt from permit requirements, including Norfolk Island pine, Schefflera, Melaleuca, Florida Holly (Brazilian pepper), Australian Pine, Ficus Benjamina, and Ficus Nitida. Tree removal must not occur during active nesting season for protected bird species.
Removing a protected tree without a permit is a code violation with fines starting at $250. Removal of specimen trees without council approval may result in enhanced penalties and mandatory replacement at appraised value. Repeat offenders face escalating fines.
