Sonoma Municipal Code Chapter 12.08 requires a written permit from the City before altering, removing, or relocating any 'significant tree' on private or public property.
Under SMC §12.08.050, it is unlawful for any person — other than under emergency circumstances — to alter, remove, or relocate any significant tree or significant private tree without first obtaining a written permit. SMC §12.08.030 separately bars anyone other than the Public Works Director (or authorized representative) from trimming, pruning, bracing, or planting trees in public rights-of-way or on public property without a written permit. Many oak species, plus deciduous species (elm, maple) and evergreens (redwood, cedar) can attain 'significant' status under SMC §12.08.020. Tree removal applications are reviewed by the City through the Tree Committee process referenced in Article IV (Exceptions) and Article V.
Violation of SMC §12.08.030 (unauthorized work on public trees) carries a fine of $1,000. Removing a regulated tree without a permit triggers replacement obligations under SMC §12.08.065 and may be enforced as a municipal code violation through administrative citation or misdemeanor prosecution.
