Customers of the Suffolk County Water Authority and private well owners can report leaks, water-quality concerns, and main breaks through SCWA, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, and the New York State drinking-water hotline.
SCWA operates a 24-hour main-break and leak hotline for street leaks, hydrant malfunctions, and pressure complaints. Customers who suspect contamination contact SCDHS Office of Water Resources, which administers Article 6 and Article 12 of the Suffolk County Sanitary Code governing water supply and septic systems. Private well owners with quality concerns can request testing through SCDHS, particularly for nitrates, 1,4-dioxane, and PFAS, which have prompted aggressive Suffolk treatment investments. Leak-detection rebates are available through SCWA for fixture upgrades.
Failure to report a known main-side leak can shift repair liability to the property owner; failure to address a private-side leak generates SCWA service penalties and possible shutoff for waste of water under tariff rules.
