Lynwood permits carports as accessory structures in residential zones, but they may only supplement the required enclosed garage, not replace it, under the parking standards of the Zoning Code.
Carports are listed among permitted residential accessory uses in Lynwood Municipal Code section 25-20-2, alongside garages, storage sheds, and covered patios. However, section 25-65-5 provides that carports may be approved in addition to the required garage(s) but in no way shall be used to replace the required garage; each single-family residence must still provide a 2-car garage of at least 20 by 20 feet. In carport-court designs, no more than five parking spaces are allowed within each carport structure, and materials must be consistent with the main building. Carports must meet the zone's side, street-side, and rear setbacks.
Using a carport to replace a required garage, or building one in a required setback without approval, violates the Zoning Code and is subject to Code Enforcement action.
