In Lynwood front yards, retaining walls may not exceed 30 inches, and the total height of any front-yard wall including the retaining portion may not exceed 48 inches. Retaining and crib walls elsewhere are governed by separate height limits and building code guardrail rules.
Lynwood Municipal Code Section 25-10-12(B)(10) limits the height of retaining walls in the front yard to thirty inches (30") or less, and caps the total height of any wall in a front yard, including a retaining portion, at forty-eight inches (48") or less. Section 25-10-12(B)(2) addresses retaining and crib walls that retain earth or water outside the required front yard; the measured wall height excludes any guardrail or open fence required by the building code. On slopes of less than fifteen percent grade, standard fence and wall heights apply. As an alternative to strict retaining-wall limits, stepped or terraced walls may be approved through a planning use permit, subject to the code's horizontal offset requirement.
Front-yard retaining walls over 30 inches, or combined walls over 48 inches, violate the code. Stepped or terraced designs require a planning use permit before construction.
