Under Pleasanton Municipal Code Chapter 18.84, carports are limited to the rear yard. A garage or carport serving a dwelling needs a 23-foot front yard (15 feet if entered parallel to the street) and a 20-foot side yard on a corner lot's street side. Demolishing a carport for an ADU does not require replacing the parking.
Carport placement in Pleasanton is governed by Chapter 18.84 (Site, Yard, Bulk, Usable Open Space and Landscaping Regulations). The code provides that carports shall be limited to the rear yard. For a garage, carport, or required off-street parking space serving a dwelling in the R-1-6,500, R-1-7,500, R-1-8,500, R-1-10,000, and RM districts, the minimum front yard is 23 feet so a car can stand outside without encroaching on the sidewalk; where the garage or carport is entered parallel to the street, the front yard may be reduced to 15 feet. On the side street of a corner lot, the minimum side yard for such a structure is 20 feet, unless it is entered parallel to the street, in which case the otherwise-required side yard applies. As an accessory structure, a carport is also subject to the Class I/Class II location rules of Section 18.84.160 (rear or interior side yard within 35 feet of the rear lot line). If a carport is demolished in conjunction with building an ADU, the city's ADU handout confirms those off-street parking spaces do not have to be replaced. A building permit is generally required to construct a carport; homeowners should verify setback compliance and any PUD conditions with the Planning Division.
Building a carport in a front yard, failing the 23-foot driveway depth, or violating corner-lot side-yard requirements is a zoning violation enforced by Code Enforcement. The city may require relocation or removal of a non-conforming carport.
