Beekeeping is regulated at the state level by the Oregon Department of Agriculture under ORS Chapter 596. Washington County does not impose additional restrictions on beekeeping in unincorporated areas. Roosters and male peacocks are not regulated in urban unincorporated Washington County.
Washington County regulates residential beekeeping through zoning and nuisance ordinances. Where permitted, hive counts are typically limited (1 to 4 hives for standard residential lots). Hives must meet setback requirements from property lines and neighboring homes. Flyway barriers (6-foot fence/hedge) may be required. Water source must be provided. Oregon Department of Agriculture requires apiary registration under ORS Chapter 596. Oregonβs climate is favorable for beekeeping with strong local beekeeping communities.
Unauthorized hives: removal order. Nuisance complaints: mediation then fines. Unregistered apiary: ODA enforcement.
