El Paso County has some of Colorado's most restricted drone airspace due to the concentration of Department of Defense installations. The USAF Academy (USAFA), Peterson Space Force Base, Schriever SFB, Fort Carson, and Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station all impose restricted or prohibited airspace (R-2601, military operating areas). Colorado Springs Airport (COS) is Class D controlled — drones need LAANC authorization from the FAA. Under 49 USC §44809, recreational drones over 0.55 lbs must be FAA-registered, flown below 400 feet AGL, within visual line of sight, and operators must pass TRUST. Pikes Peak Summit (Pikes Peak-America's Mountain) prohibits drone launches under Colorado Springs Parks Rule 5.10. El Paso County Parks (Bear Creek, Fountain Creek, Palmer Lake) require permits for drone use. North Cheyenne Cañon Park prohibits drones entirely. The Garden of the Gods (Colorado Springs city park) prohibits drones — one of the most-cited violations. Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) frequently issued over USAFA for events (graduation, football games). Violations in military airspace can trigger federal criminal charges.
