Rockville, MD Drone Rules: Recreational Drones (2026)

Rockville lies within the Washington DC Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA), a 30-nautical-mile radius around Reagan National Airport established under 14 CFR Part 93 Subpart V. Much of Rockville also falls within the more restrictive Flight Restricted Zone (FRZ), a 15-nautical-mile inner ring where drone operations face the strictest controls in the nation. Federal law preempts local drone regulation for airspace matters, but these federal restrictions make Rockville one of the most restricted areas in the country for drone flight. Recreational drone operators must comply with FAA Part 107 or the recreational flyer exemption under 49 USC 44809, plus the additional SFRA requirements. All drone flights in the SFRA require advance authorization through the FAA Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) system or a specific COA (Certificate of Waiver or Authorization). Within the FRZ, recreational drone flights are generally prohibited without specific FAA approval, which is rarely granted. Operators must register their drones with the FAA, display the registration number, and enable Remote ID. The city of Rockville also prohibits drone launches and landings in city parks without written permission from the Recreation and Parks Department.
