Every fence in unincorporated Guilford County must avoid blocking street sight lines, doors, windows and drainageways, and keep at least 2 feet of clearance from building walls. Historic-district fences follow their district guidelines.
UDO Section 6.4.C sets the baseline requirements for all fences: they may not obstruct vision at street intersections, may not alter the natural flow of water in a stream, creek, swale or ditch, and may not block access from doors or windows, keeping at least two feet clearance from building walls except where they attach to a wall. Fences in Historic Districts must meet that district's guidelines. Barbed-wire-topped fences must set the bottom strand at least six feet above grade with supports slanting at least 30 degrees. Fences must be maintained so they do not become a nuisance.
Any fence that endangers a person, animal or property is a nuisance; the Enforcement Officer may require the owner or occupant to repair, replace or demolish it.
