In unincorporated Guilford County, residential fences may not exceed 4 feet up to the front setback line and 8 feet behind it. Recreational fences can reach 12 feet if transparent and within the setback.
The Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) Section 6.4.E caps residential fences at 4 feet before the front setback line and 8 feet behind it. Group-housing developments are held to 4 feet within 15 feet of a street right-of-way (7 feet for patio enclosures). Recreational-use fences may reach 12 feet if transparent and inside the required setback, otherwise 8 feet; commercial, industrial, institutional and office fences are capped at 8 feet. Fence height is measured the same way as buildings, and any retaining wall or berm the fence sits on counts toward the total height.
Fences endangering persons, animals or property are declared a nuisance; the Enforcement Officer may order the owner to repair, replace or demolish the fence.
