New Orleans fences must satisfy CZO Art. 21.6.N: no more than 8 feet in any yard (7 feet in historic districts), open fences in front yards, and a permit from the Department of Safety and Permits. Historic districts add design review.
The core CZO requirements are: (1) fences and walls may sit in any yard but may not exceed 8 feet, or 7 feet within a national historic district; (2) front-yard fences must be open fences; (3) walls along a residential/commercial-to-industrial boundary may reach 10 feet; and (4) on differing grades, height is measured from the highest grade with a 10-foot absolute cap. Because most older neighborhoods lie in HDLC or Vieux Carre districts, fence materials and design must also earn a certificate of appropriateness. Certain lakefront subdivisions have their own lower front-yard fence limits.
Non-compliant fences are subject to zoning enforcement by Safety and Permits; owners may be ordered to remove, lower, or redesign the fence, and historic-district violations carry additional penalties.
