In New Orleans (Orleans Parish), a fence or wall may be located in any yard but may not exceed 8 feet, except within national historic districts, where the maximum is 7 feet. Fences in front yards must be open fences.
The Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance (CZO) Sec. 21.6.N.1.a caps fences and walls at 8 feet in any yard citywide, dropping to 7 feet inside a national historic district. Front-yard fences must be open fences. Along a boundary between a residential, commercial, or mixed-use district and an industrial district, a wall may reach 10 feet (Sec. 21.6.N.1.b). Where grade differs between abutting lots, height is measured from the highest grade at the property line, and total fence height may never exceed 10 feet. Special lakefront subdivisions (Lake Vista, Lake Terrace) have lower front-yard limits near the street.
Zoning enforcement by the Department of Safety and Permits; a non-conforming fence must be lowered or removed. Building over height limits without a permit invites stop-work orders and fines.
