Under Venice Land Development Code Ch. 86, Art. VI, Div. 9 (Berms, Walls and Fences) Sec. 86-497, residential fences are limited to 6 feet in side and rear yards. Front-yard solid fences are limited to 3 feet; open (sight-permeable) fences may be up to 6 feet.
Sec. 86-497 measures height from existing ground elevation. On corner lots with multiple street frontages, only the street-address frontage is treated as the front yard for the 3-foot solid-fence limit; the secondary frontage uses the side-yard 6-foot limit. Block, concrete, or masonry fences must be finished with a cementitious coat and color consistent with the principal residence. Fences are exempt from typical setback requirements as long as the height limits are met.
Building an overheight fence without a variance is a Code violation under Sec. 1-14 with fines up to $500 per day plus an order to bring the fence into compliance or remove it. Code Enforcement Board may impose escalating daily fines until corrected.
