Fences and walls must aesthetically complement the yard and be compatible with neighboring yards, fences, and structures. Where an 8-foot fence adjoins a lower fence, it must step or slope down to match the adjoining height or 6 feet, whichever is greater.
UCMC Chapter 18.32 requires that fences and walls aesthetically complement the yard area and be compatible with neighboring yards, fences, and structures. When an 8-foot fence (allowed only where a yard abuts qualifying uses) adjoins a fence of lower height, the taller fence must be designed to step or slope down to the height of the adjoining fence or to 6 feet, whichever is greater. The city does not assign shared-fence cost responsibility; California Civil Code Section 841 (the Good Neighbor Fence Law) presumes adjoining owners share equally in the reasonable cost of a boundary fence and requires 30 days' written notice before construction or replacement.
Disputes over a shared boundary fence are generally civil matters between neighbors under state law. Zoning compatibility and step-down requirements are enforced by the Planning Division through code enforcement.
