Union City uses standard painted-curb colors under Chapter 10.36: red means no stopping, standing or parking at any time; yellow marks commercial loading zones; and white marks passenger loading zones. Curb markings are authorized and applied by the City, not by residents.
Chapter 10.36 establishes curb-marking colors to indicate parking regulations. Red curb means no stopping, standing or parking at any time, except as permitted by the Vehicle Code and except that a bus may stop in a marked bus zone. Yellow paint on the top of curbs indicates commercial loading zones, where between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. (except Sundays and holidays) stopping is limited to loading materials or passengers for up to three minutes. White paint indicates passenger loading zones, for loading passengers or depositing mail for up to three minutes during the same hours. These zones are designated by the City Traffic Engineer and painted by the City. Residents may not paint curbs themselves; only authorized markings are enforceable.
Stopping or parking contrary to a red, yellow or white curb marking is a parking infraction under Chapter 10.36; unauthorized curb painting by a resident is not an enforceable parking control and may itself be a code violation.
