Fences and structures intended to exceed 3 feet above grade may not use metal, plastic, or similar materials. Acceptable materials are limited to natural materials such as wood, masonry, and earth materials.
Under UCMC Section 18.32.040, acceptable fence materials are natural materials such as wood, masonry, and earth materials. Metal, plastic, or other similar materials are not acceptable where the fence or structure is intended to exceed 3 feet above grade, except that metal may be used for posts or other support elements. Below 3 feet, decorative metal or other materials are not subject to this restriction. The municipal code text reviewed does not separately enumerate a barbed-wire or razor-wire prohibition for residential districts; such above-3-foot metal fencing would nonetheless fall under the metal-material exclusion and should be confirmed with the Planning Division.
A tall metal or plastic fence installed above 3 feet in a residential district may be required to be replaced with an acceptable natural material or lowered to 3 feet.
