Lewisville requires all residential swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs to be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches in height with self-closing, self-latching gates under the adopted International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC). Barrier must be installed before the pool is filled.
Lewisville enforces swimming pool barrier requirements through the adopted International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC) and International Residential Code (IRC) Chapter 31. All residential in-ground and above-ground swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs capable of holding 24 inches or more of water must be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches in height measured from the finished grade on the exterior side. Barrier openings must not allow passage of a 4-inch sphere. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch located at least 54 inches above the ground or on the pool side of the gate with a shielding mechanism. The pool barrier must be in place before the pool is filled with water. A house wall may serve as part of the barrier if all doors and windows opening to the pool area have alarms or are otherwise secured. Above-ground pools with sides at least 48 inches above grade may use the pool wall as the barrier if the ladder or steps are removable or lockable. The Lewisville Building Inspections Division conducts barrier inspections as part of the pool permit process.
Stop-work order until barrier is compliant. Pool must be drained or secured if barrier is inadequate. Fines up to $2,000 per violation. Building permit may be revoked.
