Renton Municipal Code 4-5-060 adopts the International Residential Code (IRC) including Appendix G, which governs swimming pool and spa barriers. Any pool or spa with water deeper than 24 inches must be enclosed by a barrier meeting the following standards: minimum height of 48 inches measured from the outside; maximum 4-inch clearance between the bottom of the barrier and the ground; vertical openings no more than 4 inches wide; if horizontal members are less than 45 inches apart, vertical openings limited to 1.75 inches; gates must open outward away from the pool, be self-closing, and have a self-latching mechanism with the release at least 54 inches above the ground. When a dwelling wall serves as part of the barrier, doors leading to the pool area must have alarms or lockable covers. Above-ground pools with walls 48 inches or more in height can serve as the barrier if the ladder is removable or lockable. Permits are required for in-ground pools and include inspection of the barrier.
