Redmond requires a 48-inch pool barrier with self-closing, self-latching gate for any pool or spa over 24 inches deep under RMC 15.06, adopting IRC Appendix G. Permits and inspection are required.
Redmond adopts the Washington State Building Code and International Residential Code Appendix G through RMC Chapter 15.06. Any pool, spa, or hot tub capable of holding water 24 inches or deeper must be surrounded by a barrier at least 48 inches tall measured from the outside. Vertical fence members must be no more than 4 inches apart; decorative cutouts must be no larger than 1.75 inches. Chain-link fences must have mesh openings 1.25 inches or smaller or be woven with slats. Gates must open outward, away from the pool, and be equipped with self-closing and self-latching hardware, with the latch at least 54 inches above the ground. If the house wall forms part of the barrier, doors leading from the house to the pool area must have either a powered safety cover or an alarm audible throughout the dwelling. Pool construction requires a building permit, a final inspection, and a separate electrical permit for pumps and heaters. HOAs in Education Hill and Trilogy may impose additional setback or style rules on pool enclosures.
Unfenced pool or non-compliant barrier: stop-use order and fines $500 to $2,500. Drowning incidents at non-compliant pools may expose owners to civil liability.
