Redmond prohibits feeding deer, coyotes, bears, raccoons, and other wildlife under RMC 6.32 and WDFW guidance. Bird feeders are allowed if maintained to avoid attracting rodents or bears.
Redmond's location along the Sammamish River and the Bear Creek corridor means residents regularly encounter black bears, coyotes, deer, raccoons, cougars (rarely), and salmon-seeking wildlife. Under RMC Chapter 6.32 and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) policy, it is unlawful to intentionally feed deer, elk, bears, cougars, raccoons, or coyotes. Residents must also avoid indirect feeding, such as leaving pet food outside, storing garbage in unsecured cans, or maintaining unpicked fruit trees during bear-active months (April through November). Bird feeders are generally allowed but must be brought in at night during bear season and cleaned to prevent rat attraction. In areas adjacent to the Sammamish River, bird feeders near salmon streams must avoid attracting predators that prey on juvenile salmon. Redmond participates in the Bear Smart program with tips for residents in Education Hill, Bear Creek, and Union Hill neighborhoods.
First offense: written warning. Subsequent: civil infraction $100 to $500. Intentional feeding of designated big game under WDFW: gross misdemeanor.
