Redmond allows residential beekeeping under RMC 21.08 with setback and hive density limits. Hives must be at least 25 feet from property lines and registered with WSDA under RCW 15.60.
Residential beekeeping is permitted in most Redmond residential zones under RMC Title 21. Hives must be set back at least 25 feet from any property line, or a minimum of 10 feet if separated by a 6-foot solid fence or hedge that forces bees to fly above head-height when leaving the hive. Hive density is generally limited to 4 hives on lots under 10,000 square feet, 6 hives on lots 10,000 to 20,000 square feet, and more on larger rural residential parcels. A fresh water source must be maintained on the keeper's property to reduce bee visits to neighbors' pools and fountains. Swarms must be collected promptly; King County Beekeepers Association maintains a swarm-capture list. Under RCW 15.60, beekeepers with one or more colonies must register annually with the Washington State Department of Agriculture. Africanized honey bees are prohibited. Redmond's Sammamish River proximity makes it a strong location for pollinator activity, and the city supports pollinator-friendly landscaping.
Failure to register with WSDA: civil penalty up to $500. Hive nuisance or too-close placement: zoning violation with fines of $100 to $250 and hive removal.
