Redmond follows RCW 16.30 and King County Code 11.04, which prohibit potentially dangerous wild animals including big cats, primates, venomous snakes, and bears without state permit.
Under RCW 16.30 (Dangerous Wild Animals Act) and King County Code 11.04, it is illegal for a private individual to own, breed, or possess a potentially dangerous wild animal in Redmond without a valid state permit. Prohibited species include large cats (lions, tigers, cheetahs, cougars), non-human primates (monkeys, apes), bears (except black bear cubs under specific rehab permits), wolves and wolf-dog hybrids above a certain F-generation, venomous reptiles including cobras and rattlesnakes, and crocodilians over 5 feet. Exceptions exist for licensed zoos, AZA-accredited sanctuaries, USDA-licensed research facilities, and persons grandfathered with registered animals prior to July 22, 2007, provided the animal was continuously registered. Small exotic pets such as hedgehogs, ferrets, sugar gliders, chinchillas, non-venomous snakes, and most tropical fish are allowed. Reptiles over 6 feet (boas, pythons over 8 feet) face additional requirements. HOAs in Redmond Ridge, Education Hill, and Abbey Road often restrict exotic pets beyond state minimums.
Possessing a prohibited dangerous wild animal: gross misdemeanor under RCW 16.30.040, fines up to $5,000 plus forfeiture of the animal.
